Chemistry Coursework Rates of Reactions: Marble chips And Hydrochloric Acid Aim The aim of this experiment is to discover how the rate of reaction between Marble chips and Hydrochloric acid changes as the concentration of the acid is increased or decreased. Background This experiment is using Marble chips and Hydrochloric Acid: CaCO3 + 2HCl CaCl2 + H2O + CO2 Calcium Carbonate + Calcium Chloride + Water The rate of reaction could be measured by a change in the following: Colour Formation of precipitate Change in mass Volume of gas evolved. Time taken for given mass to disappear pH Temperature To ensure that my chosen method was successful I carried out a pilot. In my pilot, I measured the volume of gas given off in ten seconds. I used the same method as the main experiment, but I used a gas syringe and bung instead. 40 cm3 and 5 grams of medium marble chips were used Volume of Gas / cm3 Concentration /mol Repeat 1 Repeat 2 Repeat 3 Repeat 4 Average 1.00 6.00 8.00 7.00 6.00 6.75 2.00 12.00 12.00 11.00 15.00 12.50 3.00 19.00 17.00 19.00 18.00 18.25 4.00 20.00 25.00 22.00 24.00 22.75 Although...
