Describe the rate of natural selection in evolution. Natural Selection - Darwinian theory of the survival and propagation of organisms best adapted to their environment Evolution - development of species from earlier forms as an explanation of their origins. Post DNA Richard Hawkins describes natural selection as the Blind Watchmaker. A watchmaker because of how inherently complex and seemingly 'designed' many organisms are. Blind because natural selection is not conscious, it has no goal and can see no future, the results of the mechanism are purely incidental. Being 'blind' natural selection has no set or programmed rate. Despite this the laws of chance significantly limit the rate of natural selection in evolution. There are many possible forms an organism may take but there are also many many more unsuccessful forms than successful ones.
