Daphnia Investigation Variables The following input variables could be varied in this experiment, although some are obviously impractical due to time and skill constraints: À Temperature of water surrounding daphnia À Concentration of chemicals in surrounding water; both stimulants (e.g. caffeine) and depressants (e.g. alcohol) À Amount of water surrounding daphnia À Concentration of oxygen in surrounding water À Concentration of other gases in surrounding water (e.g. carbon dioxide) The only output variable that applies to this investigation is the heart rate of the daphnia. It was decided that this investigation would concentrate on the effect of a change in concentration of the stimulant caffeine. Predictions The following predictions were made before beginning the experiment: À The higher the concentration of caffeine in the surrounding water the higher the heart rate of the daphnia will be.
