Carrying out investigations with enzymes Many factors affect the rate at which enzymes work. In all investigations only one factor may be altered by you (the independent or manipulated variable), one factor is measured (the dependent variable) and all other factors must be kept constant. The following are some guidelines that relate to various aspects of the investigation and its assessment. Confounding variables: The definition of a confounding variable is any factor that affects the dependent variable other than the independent variable under investigation. Occasionally it is not possible to keep all other factors absolutely constant but these factors should at least be monitored so any fluctuations that could confound your investigation can be accounted for. An example of a confounding variable might be where the effect of light intensity on the behaviour of woodlice is the factor under investigation.
