An investigation into the reaction of Magnesium ribbon with Hydrochloric acid. Abstract: Planning: When an acid reacts with a metal, a metal-salt and hydrogen are produced! Hydrochloric acid reacts with solid magnesium to form hydrogen gas and magnesium chloride. magnesium + hydrochloric acid ? magnesium chloride + hydrogen. Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) ? MgCl2(aq) + H2(g) The two areas that I have chosen to investigate are the order of the reaction with respect to the acid, and the activation energy for the reaction. ORDER The order of a reaction essentially tells us how the rate of a reaction is related to the concentration of its reactants. In a rate equation the overall order of the reaction is found by adding the indexes of the concentration of each reactant. These indexes are in fact the order of the reaction with respect to their respective reactant. In this reaction though the concentration of Magnesium cannot change, as it is a solid. However...
