Thursday 30th January 2003 An Investigation into the Factors affecting the rate of a Chemical Reaction The collision theory Aim: to investigate the relationship between the different sizes of limestone chips and the rate of the reaction. Scientific knowledge The collision theory is when all the different particles move around and when they collide a chemical reaction occurs. Whilst doing this particular experiment there are variables. They are 1. Temperature 2. Concentration 3. Surface area The general equation for this experiment is :- CaCO3 + HCl(aq) CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g) Prediction I predict that the powdered limestone (the smallest chips) will give off the most carbon dioxide and therefore react faster in the time of one minute as it has the largest surface area meaning more limestone will be in contact with the acid. Method 1. The apparatus was collected. 2. Exactly 3 grams of powdered limestone was measured out, using a balance, and put in to a conical flask. 3. Then...
