Introduction All reactions can occur at different rates, the rate of a reaction can be defined as how fast the reaction takes place. A good method for finding how fast a reaction occurs is to measure the products. In the case of this reaction: 2HCL + CaCO3 --> CaCL2 + CO2 + H2O Hydrochloric acid + Calcium Carbonate --> Calcium chloride + Carbon dioxide + Water We can measure the volume of Carbon dioxide evolved. In order to determine how the rate is effected we must change some factors whilst keeping the rest the same. I will change the concentration of the acid and measure the gas. I will plot these results on a graph. I will then alter the size and therefore surface area of the calcium carbonate chips and measure the rate. The chips all have the same mass going into the reaction, however the smaller the chips the larger the surface...
