Acid Rain Coursework Analysis I have gathered my results and placed them on a graph from these results I can conclude that the smaller the piece of marble is the quicker the reaction with calcium carbonate. This is due to the fact that, for a fixed mass, the smaller the pieces of marble the greater the surface area. This shows that as the marble chips decrease the reaction increases. This means that the acid can attack more of the particles on smaller chips, as on large chips the particles in the centre of the chip cannot be attacked because on the small chips there is more surface area to be attacked by the calcium carbonate. My evidence of all this is if you take a look at my graph you will see that the largest chips take the longest followed by the medium then the small with powdered marble being the quickest...
