Report On Carbon Monoxide: What it is and how it gets here: Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, tasteless, invisible gas. Each carbon monoxide molecule is made of a single carbon atom bonded to a single oxygen atom. The gas is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels - gas, oil, coal and wood used in boilers, engines, oil burners, gas fires, water heaters, solid fuel appliances and open fires. If an object is a source of Carbon Monoxide, it is not generally a problem unless the gas is not ventilated so cannot escape anywhere, which then causes a build up and becomes hazardous. Why it's poisonous: When carbon monoxide is inhaled, it passes from the lungs into the bloodstream. Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin molecules in the blood and also to oxygen molecules, forming Carboxyhaemoglobin. Carboxyhaemoglobin therefore interferes by displacing oxygen from the bloodstream and affecting the oxygen transport and...
