Each carbon monoxide molecule is made of a single carbon atom bonded to a single oxygen atom. The gas is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels - gas, oil, coal and wood used in boilers, engines, oil burners, gas fires, water heaters, solid fuel appliances and open fires. Why it's poisonous: When carbon monoxide is inhaled, it passes from the lungs into the bloodstream. Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin molecules in the blood and also to oxygen molecules, forming Carboxyhaemoglobin.
