Investigation into burning fuels Plan Aim: To measure the energy given by 7 different alcohols and how well they burn. Experiment Aims: In this experiment I am going to investigate the effects of burning seven different alcohols. These fuels are: - * Ethanol C2H5OH * Propan-1-ol C3H7OH * Butanol C4H9OH * Pentanol C5H11OH * Hexanol C6H13OH * Heptanol C7H15OH * Octanol C8H17OH As all of these fuels are alcohols they all have similar properties so differences can be attributed to energy efficiency and possibly the bad design of the experiment and not to other factors. To carry out this investigation I will burn each alcohol in turn and use them to heat a constant amount of water for a constant amount of time and measure the temperature difference. I will also measure the difference in mass before and after the experiment to see how much of the substance was used to produce the heat. I will display all of this information after the experiment in graphs...
