SPECTROSCOPY Spectroscopy is the study of spectra by using emission, absorption or scattering of electromagnetic radiation. Mass Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance are the three most useful techniques used today for determining the chemical structure of compounds. MASS SOECTROSCOPY * PROCESS Mass Spectroscopy is used for measuring the molecular masses of individual molecules. The three important functions of a mass spectrometer and the related components include: - The Ion Source: A small sample of compound which is ionized usually to cations by loss of an electron. - The Mass Analyser: The ions are sorted and separated according to their mass and charge. - The Detector: The sorted and separated ions are detected and counted and finally the results are displayed on a chart. Because ions are very reactive and short-lived, this process has to be done in a vacuum condition.
