Task To investigate the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with certain catalysts. The catalysts available are: Manganese IV oxide (MnO2) Zinc oxide (ZnO) Lead IV oxide (PbO2) Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) Iron III oxide (Fe2O3) Copper II oxide (CuO) Copper III oxide (Cu2O) More specifically, it has been decided to investigate the change in time taken to fill a full test tube with oxygen in relation to a change in the amount of catalyst. Theory The formula for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is as follows: 2H202(aq) => 2H20(l) + O2(g) It is worth noting that the compounds used are used as catalysts and therefore they are not used up, nor do they play a part in the equation. They simply act to speed up the natural process of hydrogen peroxide decomposition.
