Inter Molecular Forces and Intra-Molecular Forces Van der Waals' forces Covalent and ionic bonding explain the different forces that attract atoms and hold them together but it does not explain what attracts molecules to other molecules. For an answer to this we have to look for other forms of attraction. In covalent bonding we have seen that if electrons are more attracted to one atom in the bond than to others the density of the electron charge is greater closer to the most electronegative atom. Nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine are the most electronegative. This leads to the molecule having a small negative charge at one end and a positive charge of the other. The molecule is then described as a polar molecule.
