WET TESTS When I put the universal indicator into the test tubes containing the unknown, there was no colour change. This indicated instantly that the unknown was not a phenol or a carboxylic acid. However, the IR of the unknown suggested that it was not a phenol because there was no strong, broad absorption at 3200-3600 cm-1 on the IR of the unknown. I then added 2-4 dinitrophenylhydrazine to the unknown I observed a deep yellow/orange precipitate. This then told me that the functional group present could be an aldehyde or a ketone. I then added tollen's reagent to the unknown. After heating the unknown with the reagent, I observed a silver mirror forming on the sides of the test tubes from the solution. This...
