A.S. Level Chemistry 16/09/02 Finding the formula of CuO by reduction Aim To find the formula of Copper Oxide by reduction. By vaporising ethanol in a reduction tube and heating copper oxide. Apparatus * U tube * 3 rubber bungs * Bunsen burner * Reduction tube * Tube * Spatula * Analytical balance * 6 clamp stands Mineral wool * Matches Chemicals Copper Oxide Ethanol Safety equipment Lab coat 2 safety screens Safety glasses Method 1. Collect all equipment listed above. 2. Weigh a clean, dry reduction tube. 3. Set up the apparatus as shown below. Diagram of apparatus set out 4. Add enough Ethanol to the mineral wool to wet it thoroughly but pour any excess liquid away before setting up. Make sure the apparatus is set up behind a safety screen or in a fume cupboard with the front pulled down. 5. Now carefully turn on the gas so it produces a stream of Ethanol. Vapour passing over the oxide. If liquid looks as if it might go over into the reduction...
