Air Masses An air mass is a large body of air with similar temperature and humidity throughout. The temperature and humidity will still be different at a higher or lower altitude, but at any given level they will be almost identical across the air mass. There are several classifications of air masses, depending its' surface temperature and humidity levels. A polar air mass is cool at surface level, a maritime air mass is moist at the surface, and a continental air mass is dry at it surface. There is also a fourth type, arctic air masses originate at the poles, and polar air masses do not. There are sub categories of these classifications determined by combining surface temperature and humidity characteristics, for example tropical maritime and tropical continental.
