ANALYSIS OF UNKNOWN COMPOUND C I have analysed the information provided for me on unknown compound C and below I have written an analysis on what I have found out from the results of some wet tests and the NMR, IR and mass spectrum. To begin with, I looked at my wet test results. Overall this compound did not react with many of the reagents apart from; - 1. Blue litmus- on observation there was a colours change, from blue to red, Conclusion: blue litmus is an acid-base indicator whose colour in acid is different to that in a base. The presence of an acid, (pH less then 7) turns blue litmus red, therefore this compound is acidic. 2. Phosphorus pentachloride- on observation, steamy white fumes evolved, which turned moist blue litmus paper red. Conclusion: -This indicates the presence of a carboxylic acid, as shown; CH3COOH + PCl5 -------------> CH3COCl +...
