In the simplest explanation, electrolysis is the study of chemical reactions produced from electrical effects. In most occasions the voltage and currents cause the reactions. Electrolysis, usually, is the process of splitting chemicals by using electricity. What is meant by the following terms? Electrolyte: An 'electrolyte' is a molten ionic compound, or a solution of an ionic compound, that conducts electricity by undergoing chemical changes. Electrodes: Electrodes in my experiment are two carbon rods, one electrically positive electrode is called the anode and other negative electrode is called the cathode. Ions: Ions are particles formed when a neutral atom or group of atoms gains or loses one or more electrons.
