Investigating Electroplating We are trying to find if the mass of plating changes when the distance between the anode and cathode changes. So as this experiment is fair, we will be keeping the current the same by altering the voltage, the time for each distance will be kept the same and the solution if nickel ammonium sulphate will remain the same. Electrolysis is the decomposition of an electrolyte by passing electricity through it. The anode and cathode are used to make the electrical contact with the solution. Electrolysis pulls the electrolyte apart with one part going to the cathode while the other part goes to the anode. The anode is where a non-metal like oxygen is formed; while at the cathode a metal or sometimes hydrogen is formed. In our experiment the nail, which will be the cathode will form a layer of nickel.
