Butyl acetate was synthesized by the reaction of acetic acid with butyl alcohol according to the following equilibrium reaction: Figure 1. Experimental Reaction. . The formation of butyl acetate was accomplished through the esterfication of butyl alcohol by acetic acid. The newly formed butyl acetate was purified through the use of a simple distillation procedure. Procedure 12 mL of acetic acid was combined with 25 mL of butyl alcohol in a boiling flask. 1.0 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid was added along with a few boiling chips. The acetic acid-butyl alcohol-sulfuric acid mixture was then heated to boiling under reflux for 30 minutes.
