Ethanol distillation Objective: To filter the ethanol from the yeast mixture and then measure its purity. Distillation the best form of filtering in this situation. Method: set the equipment up like the diagram and then afterwards: 1. Pour the mixture containing ethanol, water and the yeast extract into the round bottom flask and begin heating it up. 2. Place the flask (to collect the liquid containing ethanol and perhaps other chemicals) in a suitable position so it can collect the chemical when it reaches boiling point. 3. The will evaporate and then condense on the condenser and drip into the flask. 4. Repeat the process of boiling the collected chemical until the boiling point reaches roughly 70oC, which is when ethanol boils. Problems encountered Many problems were encountered during the setting up stages of this experiment, because some unrequited equipment were placed together with the required equipment, which meant we had to use a trial and error method...
