Determining the Concentration of a Limewater Solution For this experiment I will be trying to find out the concentration of a sample of limewater. I also have access to a 2 mol dm-3 solution of Hydrochloric acid. I will dilute the acid to a suitable concentration and then titrate the acid against the limewater, and by noting down the amount of acid needed to neutralise the limewater, I will be able to calculate the concentration of the limewater in grams per decimetre cubed (g dm-3) Limewater is simply quicklime (or CaO) dissolved in excess water to produce an aqueous solution of slaked lime: CaO(s) + H20(l) Ca(OH)2(l) Ca(OH)2(l) + H20(l) Ca(OH)2(aq) The equation for the reaction between limewater and hydrochloric acid is: Limewater + Hydrochloric acid Calcium Chloride + Water Ca(OH)2(aq) + 2HCl(l) CaCl2(aq) + 2H20(l) For this experiment I will need the following apparatus: o Burette o 25cm3 pipette and 5cm3 graduated pipette o Safety filler o Conical...
