ACIDS AND BASES AND SALTS Aim: The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of indicators on substances such as Acids, Alkali's and Water. Theory: In this experiment indicators were used to verify substances as acids, neutral (water) or alkalis. The indicator also changes the colour of the solution; the colour indicating whether it is acid, base or neutral. An Acid is a substance that in solution produces hydrogen ions, and turns blue Litmus red when an acid and Litmus Solution are combined. If the previous procedure is repeated but using a neutral solution of water instead of an acid, the solution also turns blue Litmus red. A base is a substance that combines with the hydrogen ion of an acid, but without producing hydrogen gas, when Litmus solution is added to it changes from blue/purple to blue. Bases are basically alkalis that are soluble in water. When the other...
