Becky Lown 10B Chemistry coursework: designing a fuel for a fondue kit. In this investigation I will be looking at different alcohols and seeing which ones heat water most efficiently. I will investigate the amount of heat energy given off when water is heated with different spirit burners. The alcohols I will be using are methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol. The reaction, which happens, can be classified as either an exothermic reaction as it gives off heat energy to the water or oxidation as it burns to produce oxygen and hydrogen, which bond together to form water. In this experiment I shall be using a small conical flask, as this will concentrate the heat in a smaller area so I will get a more accurate result to analyse.
