Calibrating an instrument or device We need to calibrate instruments and devices to put a scale on them in the first place .To do this we need to compare it with a standard. We need to check the instrument or device is correctly calibrated so it is accurate. Examples of these are: *Clocks need to be accurate to tell the correct time * A speed dial has to be correctly calibrated so that the speed shown is correct and that accidents could be prevented *An altimeter would need to be correctly calibrated so that it would show the correct height on a plane, if this was not correctly calibrated the pilot would not know his correct height and may crash the plane. *Breath testers for alcohol to be correctly calibrated so that they can read the correct amount of alcohol on the breath.
