The chemical symbol for sodium hydroxide is NaOH. It liberates substantial heat when dissolved in water or neutralized with acid. This is called effervescent. The common name for sodium hydroxide is caustic soda, which is very useful for making a wide range of chemical product such as soaps, crayon, paper, explosives, dye and cosmetics. It is also used for many other industrial products. sodium hydroxide is also used as a pollution-preventing agent, it neutralises weak acids. It is a colourless solution, which reacts with many metallic or acidic compounds. Sodium hydroxide is a base, and as such will produce an alkaline reaction when it is tested with a chemical indicator. It is one of the few bases that are soluble in water.
