An investigation into the effects on the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium ribbon. Introduction: Magnesium Ribbon is a strip of Magnesium that is solid at room temperature. When mixed with hydrochloric acid it produces Magnesium Chloride, which is a liquid and Hydrogen gas. This experiment investigates the difference in rate of reaction between the two substances when we are varying the concentration of hydrochloric acid. Prediction: I predict that the higher the concentration of hydrochloric acid the faster the rate reaction. During the experiment the particles will react and create hydrogen that will replace the water in the conical flask. The Scientific formula for this reaction is: Magnesium + Hydrochloric Acid Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen Mg(s) 2HCl(aq) MgCl2(aq) H2(s) Method: First fill a conical flash with 50 ml of hydrochloric acid, place your 2 cm long strip of magnesium ribbon into the hydrochloric acid and place the bung on immediately.
