Acid Rain Acid rain, which is also known as Acid Precipitation, can be defined as one of the most dangerous forms of pollution. Today it has developed into a serious environmental problem for large areas of the world. Clean or unpolluted rain usually has slight acidic level but in Acid Rain the pH level is about 5.6. The primary cause of acid rain is due to the burning of fossil fuels. Today fossil fuels are burnt in transportation, industry, power generation; natural disasters etc and thus they create harmful gases such as Sulphur Dioxides (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOX). But after these gases are released into the atmosphere they go through several complex processes of chemical reactions before turning into the acids found in the acid rain.
