A NEUTRALISATION REACTION
Joseph Murphy, S2A
Background Knowledge:
A substance which neutralises an acid is called a base. An alkali is a soluble base, which forms a salt + water when it reacts with an acid.
Therefore: Acid + Alkali = Salt + Water
Neutralisation reactions are also exothermic, meaning they emit heat. In this reaction, bonds are formed between the acid and alkali, and bond making is exothermic. This is because the energy needed to break the bonds is less than energy given out when bond is formed.
Therefore:
Energy needed to break bonds
