STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING - the role of the volunteer We engage in learning throughout our lives. It is a continuous process based on our own experiences and the reactions of others. This has been described as experiential learning and is a normal process achieved by evidence on experiences that we have as we go through life. In looking at the association to staff development Tony Pont (1996) described experiential learning as putting "...the emphasis on the actual experiences that people go through as the starting point for the learning process and then emphasises the analytical mental processes that individuals use to analyse the experience." This introduces another dimension to the term, as implicit in it is the link to professional development.
