I have chosen to interview three employees from the Homebase Catford store in South-East London to see how their work roles, motivations and perceptions affect their attitudes towards work. Homebase is a busy chain of DIY stores across the UK that has grown from its roots in 1981 to its present composition of over 275 stores in 2003. The first site was set up in Leeds, originally intended as a Home and Garden Organisation but after stores opened in Croydon it won the prize for busiest DIY store in the UK two years in a row and subsequently gained its reputation as a DIY store. It proceeded to takeover Texas in 1996/97 in a reverse takeover move but after Sainsbury's de-invested in the store, it has had 3 owners in 5 years, most notably the recent takeover by Argos who paid millions for the company.
