Definition of Organisation Development 'Organisation development' is the generic term that embraced the different approaches to dealing with organisation change. Basically organisation development, as proposed by Beckhard (1969), 'must be planned; must be organisation wide; must be managed from the top'. It is a Strategy, then, that leads to an improvement in the organisation's overall effectiveness. It is an approach that leaves the organisation as one that deliberately promotes and plans change. Part of the process involves developing the capacity and capabilities of the employees and the opportunities for them to contribute to the goals of the organisation. It is then a planned and integrated approach to change that considers the organisation as a whole. Organisation development has four stages: Diagnosis, Intervention, Maintenance and Review.
