... Why did Gorbachev launch Perestroika? When Russia came under Socialist rule, economic growth seemed to reach high levels. The USSR together with its capitalist enemy, the USA, was the economical and technical might, let alone its military power. However, soon the tables turned and the country had to face a severe economic crisis due to the Socialist command system. Moscow would not recognise its failure and continue living in a world of illusion in which they still were the superpower. It was not until Mikhail Gorbachev came to power, when people started realising the deteriorating effects of their system: "I will recall that we started perestroika under the pressure of urgent, vital problems...As is known, the economic development rates were declining in our country, to reach a critical point. But even those rates, as has become clear now, were achieved in considerable measure on an unhealthy basis, due to temporary factors.
