Ernie Gilbert Debate Paper Let it be resolved, "Globalization benefits the rich and hurts the poor". Emory University's website defines globalization as the "expansion of global linkages, organization of social life on global scale, and growth of global consciousness, hence consolidation of world society"(Emory). At a top political and economic level, globalization is the process of denationalization of markets, politics and legal systems, i.e., the rise of the so-called global economy. The consequences of this political and economic restructuring on local economies, human welfare and environment are the subject of an open debate among international organizations, governmental institutions and the academic world. Globalization is not a new concept. The modern world-system originated with the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia in 1684. In parts of Western Europe, feudalism gave way to scientific innovation and the rise of market institutions as a result of the Industrial Revolution.
