Assess the relative merits of indirect taxes against direct taxes Indirect Tax - A tax you do not pay directly, but which is passed on to you by an increase in your expenses. For instance, you do not pay a tariff directly. But when you buy imported merchandise, the price includes any tariff taxes paid. Direct Tax - As opposed to indirect taxes, such as tariffs and business taxes. Direct taxes include income and property taxes. Taxes imposed by governments on goods and services are so-called indirect taxes because they are in some form eventually paid by consumers. Such indirect taxes contrast with a tax on one's income or wealth (direct taxes), which is paid directly by the taxpayer to the government. An employer deducts tax from weekly or monthly wages before the employee receives his/her pay cheque. The amount of tax deducted depends on the taxpayer's individual circumstances.
