A flexible labour market is one where there are: flexible employment patterns both in terms of hours worked and skills required of the workforce. This often involves offering short-term contracts to workers in industries where labour demand is variable. The UK and USA are said to have developed flexible labour markets, however in the EU greater pressure is being put onto the nations to make the market more flexible in order to increase employment. In recent years the UK has made the labour market far more flexible by introducing a number of policies. Here are some examples: * New employment laws make it easier for businesses to hire and fire workers. This was passed due to the long term decline in trade union representation in the workplace. * Abolition of Wages Councils (1993) which had offered some statutory protection...
