Has Genetic Engineering Gone Too Far? Amy Schreffler What exactly is cloning? Cloning is the duplication of genetic material, without sexual reproduction. Even though there may be only one pro and several cons about this project, the pursuit of cloning is still being engaged in since the pro more heavily out weighs all the cons according to conservationists. Pros Cons Could possibly save endangered species Expensive (who will pay for it; could be spent in "better" ways) Risky (placental abnormalities, immune deficiencies, and heart and lung defects) Will detract attention from the real conservation issue of habitat loss Could produce a weakened gene pool created by interbreeding cloned animals Normally recessive genetic defects could appear in populations which would lead to genetic abnormalities My opinion is 50/50 because I believe this sort of research should...
