Genetically Modified Crops- The Benefits 0: Introduction Genetically modified organisms (G.M.O,'s) are organisms, such as plants, that have had genes added to them to enhance their performance at a specific task. The task in question could be resistance to known diseases or pests such as locusts. The way in which this is done is complex and beyond the scope of this essay. What I will deal with in this piece is whether gm crops are beneficial to society. In the UK gm crops are not being grown commercially, although a number of trials are underway on oilseed rape, maize, sugar beat and potatoes. GM crops are widely grown commercially in the rest of the world, most of them being in four countries (USA, Argentina, Canada, and China). 1: Public Concerns During the last few years GM crops have had a lot of press coverage and in the UK most of it was negative.
