Genetic Testing Genetics is the science of examining the basis of heredity. Genetic testing involves removing genetic material from a person to study their genotype - the set of genetic instructions that dictate the characteristics of an individual. Scientists have been able to identify certain genetic traits as contributing to some diseases and medical conditions. For example, we know that Down's Syndrome is caused by having an extra chromosome (47 rather than the normal 46). Medicine now has the ability to conduct genetic tests on pre-born children and determine a diagnosis of Down's Syndrome well before birth. Researchers are trying to determine if certain genotypes (genetic codes) give people a higher likelihood of suffering from diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, alcoholism, etc. Ohio Right to Life welcomes advances in knowledge about the human genome (the complete set of genetic material carried within the DNA molecule) that will help doctors and researchers...
