Enzyme Coursework

... Definition of an enzyme: An enzyme is a specialised substance made up of polymers of amino acids. The polymers and amino acids act as catalysts to control speeds of chemical reactions. They are large proteins that speed up chemical reactions. In their structure they hold polypeptide chains that come together to form an active site. Enzymes cannot be in the wrong reaction as they refuse to bind together if they are in the wrong shape. Our experiment was to investigate how much oxygen was made when changing the concentration of Substrate (Hydrogen Peroxide) using a catalyse (Potatoes). Equation: Hydrogen Peroxide -------------> Oxygen + Water In the experiment we had 2 choices; the first choice was that we would be able to change the amount of substrate (Hydrogen Peroxide) and the second was that we would be able to change the amount of Catalyse (potato) we would be using.
