Do the Benefits of Genetically Modified Crops Outweigh the Problems? The is currently many heated debates about the issue of genetically altering crops to make them disease resistant or to make them yield more crop or even immune to pest and herbicides. In this essay I will weigh up the different aspects for and against GM crops in four different areas; Economic, Biological, Ethical and Social. I will first briefly outline what the genetic engineering of crops involves then evaluate the sides of the argument from different sources. Genetic modification is possible because the genes of all organisms are made of the same chemical DNA. Restriction enzymes can cut DNA at specific sequences to create "sticky ends" which will stick to other "sticky ends" made by the same enzyme.
