Scadbury Park Field Investigation: Succession of Plants Aim To investigate the succession of plants between woodland and meadow, using an interrupted belt transect. Introduction Plants compete for food water and light. So weaker plants die out and stronger ones take over, this is succession. The cycle is: Rocks...lichen...moss...grass, buttercup, bindweed, vetches Brambles, nettles... shrubs, Hawthorne, Holly... young trees... Mature trees ... Climax community: Oak domination In this experiment we will be using a quadrat and measuring tape, but some things we must understand, are that the size of the quadrat depends on the size of the plants being tested. So our size quadrat would not be used in dense woodland for instance, a far larger one would be required. Brief Method We used a Quadrat along an interrupted belt transect to find out the succession of plant species along it, varying from meadow to the wood land.
