SAND DUNE SUCCESSION Introductory Ecology Succession is the natural change in the structure and species composition of a community over time, eventually leading to a climax community. The Climax community is reached when the species found in the area remain constant overtime with few or no species being wiped out or starting to grow. There are two types of succession: 1. Primary Succession: This is succession that occurs on a piece of ground where no living organisms where originally present, such as on a lava field after a volcanic eruption or on ground uncovered by a retreating glacier. 2. Secondary succession: This is succession that occurs on a piece of ground which had been disturbed but where some vegetation still remains.
