Claire Plumpton 10B Fungi Friend Or Foe? Fungi is a type of bacteria that can be both harmful and helpful to humans at the same time. Some types of fungi are deadly to humans, such as the famous 'Death Cap', which looks very like a common edible mushroom and can be found in the same place as it too. Fungi also make delicious food, and are a great source of vitamins and minerals, often eaten by vegetarians, so that they receive some of the vitamins and minerals often found in meat. Saccrophytic fungi play an indispensable role in the carbon cycle. The fungi and the green leaves, during photosynthesis absorb the carbon in the soil. The bacteria that make up the mushroom have essential biodegrading abilities, which are important as they break down the biological matter in leaves, replenishing the soil with the carbon, ready for the cycle to begin again.
