One is that it is the only native land mammal in Hawaii, and therefore it is the only bat in Hawaii. Hawaii would have no native land mammals left if this animal were to go extinct, so recovery efforts must be funded to preserve biodiversity in Hawaii. Hawaii has already lost about three-fourths of its original bird species and over one-third of its native plants are endangered (Fullard 1989), so the remaining biodiversity in Hawaii must be preserved. This subspecies of the Hawaiian hoary bat may even have been isolated long enough to adapt and become its own species.
