Biology coursework Planning In this piece of coursework, I am going to investigate the factors that affect the rate of osmosis. Osmosis is the diffusion of water from where it is in high concentration to where it is in low concentration. This takes place through a partially permeable membrane that allows water molecules to pass but not solute molecules such as salt. Partially permeable membranes are permeable to water but impermeable to certain dissolved substances. The salt molecules cannot diffuse through the cell membrane because they are much bigger than the water molecules. In the living cell, both the cell wall and plasma membrane determine the permeability of the cell. The ability of a substance to pass through these barriers is known as the permeation of the substance.
