Coursework biology Problem -To investigate the effect of sugar solution on potato cells. Background knowledge Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of lower water concentration. Animal cells and plant cells can both take in pure water by osmosis. The only difference between the two types of cell is that if an animal cell was put in pure water it would burst, and a plant cell would not, because the plant cell has a cell wall. Basic Method I will take 5 beakers filled with the same volume of solution; the solutions will all have different concentrations of sugar in them. I will then put two cylinders of potato of the same length into each beaker. Before I put the potatoes in the beakers I will record their weights.
