Osmosis Baptiste Dafinone Aim To investigate the effect of osmosis on potatoes. Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a lower concentration of to a higher concentration of , through a membrane. I have chosen to investigate the effect of the water potential/concentration of certain solution on potato chips. This means that I will put potato chips into sucrose solutions of different concentrations. These concentrations will be 0.25, 0.4, 0.8 and distilled water. There are other variables involved and these are; Fixed variables unless indicated Temperature ¨ Water potential of potato initially ¨ Size of potato ¨ Light intensity ¨ Mass of potato dependent variable ¨ Volume of solution potato chip is in ¨ Type of potato- different potatoes may absorb at different rates. ¨ Time left in solution ¨ Surface area of potato chip ¨ Use the same balance to measure chip Concentration of soultion- Independent variable To conduct a fair test, these factors have to be controlled.
