Biology Coursework Aim1: To investigate osmosis in potato tissue. Aim2: To determine the concentration of potato tissue i.e. when the potato neither gains nor loses water. Hypothesis: I think that the potato in the test tube of water (0mola) will gain more weight than the potato in the sucrose solution because when osmosis occurs, the water molecules move from a high concentration to a low concentration and there are more water molecules in the water than in the sucrose solution. Preliminary work: Potato Distilled water 1.0M sucrose solution Results Solution Mass before (g) Mass after (g) Difference (g) Water 3.4 3.7 0.3 Sucrose (1.0M) 3.4 3.2 -0.2 Conclusion: The potato in the sucrose solution decreased in mass but the potato in distilled water increased in mass. This was due to osmosis. Method: * Using a cork borer cut 12 pieces of potato. Line them up against a flat surface and cut them so that they are all equal. * Get rid of any skin because each...
