AIM: To find out if Osmosis occurs in a Potato, and how it affects the potato in different molar solutions of Sugar and Water SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE - Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low concentration, through a semi-permeable membrane. Concentrations can be described in different ways; the important thing to remember is that there is a difference in concentration (a concentration gradient) for osmosis to happen. Water moves so that the concentration is the same (equal) on both sides of the membrane. Low Water Concentration Semi Permeable High Water Concentration High Sugar Solution Membrane Low Sugar Concentration Concentrated Concentration Dilute Concentration PERLIMINARY EXPERIMENT - Just before we started the main experiment we had done smaller experiments to determine what concentration would be best to use. Prediction - I predict that the 10cm3 water in the visking tube will diffuse into the sugar solution...
